At the National Conference on Non-communicable Diseases, newly held in Hanoi, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Dieu - Former Director of Central Hospital K gave the latest information on current cancer.

Cancer is a global obsession

According to Associate Professor Bui Dieu, cancer has been increasing in most countries in the world. Accompanied by factors such as longevity, urbanization leads to environmental pollution and changes in habits and lifestyles harmful to health.

According to WHO data in 2000, more than 10 million people worldwide have cancer, of which more than 6 million have died from the disease.

By 2008, there were 12.7 million new cancer cases worldwide and 7.6 million deaths from cancer. By 2012 this number reached 14.1 million people with new cancer and 8.2 million deaths from cancer.

In 2012, around 25 million people globally lived with cancer, and it is estimated that by 2030 this figure will reach 30 million.

The incidence of new cancer per 100 thousand people in developed countries is almost 2 times higher than in developing countries in both men and women.

According to the research team of Associate Professor Bui Dieu, the common cancers in developed countries are lung cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer in men. Contrary to developing countries are the types of liver and cervical cancer in women.

For each type of cancer, there are also differences in the number and incidence of cancer. For example, the rate of stomach cancer in Korea and Japan is about 70 / 100,000 people, 10 times higher than Thailand. The incidence of all cancers continues to increase over time in all countries of the world.

For each type of cancer, the rate also changes over time. In the past 100 years, stomach cancer has rapidly decreased in developed countries, whereas lung and prostate cancers in men, and breast cancer in women have increased rapidly.

According to statistics, the top 5 common male cancers in the world are lung cancer with the incidence of 34.2 / 100,000 people and the mortality rate is 30%; prostate cancer 30,7 people / 100. 000 people; Colorectal cancer is 20,6 / 100. 000 people; 15/100,000 people with liver cancer; esophageal cancer 9/100,000 people.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, accounting for 12% of deaths. The number of deaths due to cancer will increase from 7 million a year from 2002 to 14 million a year by 2030 without timely preventive and preventive measures.

In Asia and the Pacific, cancer is one of the three main causes of death in humans. Cancer mortality rates reach 100 per 100,000 in Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

In China alone, cancer kills 1.3 million people every year. Cancer not only affects people directly but it is also a burden on the whole community and society.

Vietnam is among the top with high cancer mortality rates

Associate Professor Bui Dieu said that in Vietnam - a typical disease model of developing countries, social life is not high, hygiene is low, and it is in the hot and humid climate. The major diseases are bacterial, viral, parasitic and malnutrition diseases.

Currently, this model has been significantly improved but still exists. More dangerous, Vietnam has also formed the disease model of developed countries and the increasing occurrence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and traffic accidents.

In 1990, nationwide, the number of new cancer cases in Vietnam was 52,000, of which 28,000 were male, 24,000 were female.

In 2000, the International Agency for Research on Cancer in collaboration with two population cancer registry centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City estimated that there were about 71,000 new cancer patients, of which 37 were male, 33 thousand cases are female.

Up to now, according to central K hospital statistics, Vietnam has 126,000 cases of cancer and 94,000 deaths each year.

According to experts, this death figure is 9 times the number of deaths from traffic accidents, with about 257 people dying each day from cancer. Due to the late detection characteristics (with over 70% of cancer patients coming to the hospital when they are at a later stage), the treatment cannot be highly effective.

Currently, the most common cancers in Vietnam are lung cancer, breast cancer in women, stomach cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, and cervical cancer in women.

As for lung cancer, which is one of the top cancer cancers, Professor Bui Dieu said if the current situation continues until 2020, there will be 22,938 cases of lung cancer in both sexes.
